Research Interests

I am part of the C4 rice project, an international consortium trying to integrate the highly efficient C4 photosynthesis into the major crop plant rice. This would allow on the long term to feed more people on less land. In my project, i use gene editing techniques, in particular CRISPR/Cas9 to modify genes which are involved in C4 photosynthesis or change their expression. Part of my work also includes generating basic bioinformatic scripts (Python), molecular biology (Golden Gate cloning), and tissue culture (rice transformation), amongst others. Using all of these approaches, we hope to generate a preliminary C4 cycle in rice and to understand many new aspects about photosynthesis on the way.
