Research Area

The genetics and epigenetic programming of reproductive cell lineages

Research Description

The epigenetics of meiosis (Leverhulme)

Through collaborations with Ian Henderson (Cambridge) and Chris Franklin (Birmingham) we are looking at the way small RNA and methylation pathways establish the epigenetic landscape within the chromatin during premeiotic S phase in Arabidopsis, and the effect that disruption of this landscape has on the outcome of meiosis with respect to frequency of double strand breaks, final crossovers and chromosome integrity. We are particularly interested in the roles played by small RNA populations during these events. This research is principally carried out using the male cell lines within the anther, but work is underway in collaboration with Lucia Colombo (Milan) to extend it to cover events in the developing ovule.

The regulation of pollen development by small RNAs

In collaboration with David Twell (Leicester) the role of small RNAs in regulating development of the male gametophyte of Arabidopsis is being investigated from the microspore stage to the final germination of the pollen tube on stigma surface. We have demonstrated that while microRNAs operate as they do in the sporophyte, there are a number of novel gametophyte-specific microRNAs - the functions of which are currently being investigated. Other populations of small RNAs populations have been found to play important and unexpected parts in regulating the final stages of pollen maturity.
