Scientists discover oldest plant root stem cells

Two papers reporting breakthrough discoveries in root evolution were published today in Current Biology. Holger Brueninger and co-workers discovered how a genetic mechanism that controls the development of rooting cells has evolved over the past 470 million years. Sandy Hetherington and co-workers discovered the oldest meristem in which the organisation of stem cells in a root has been preserved.
