Combining DNA sequencing and fieldwork uncovers new species

Wed July 29th, 2015

Robert Scotland and coworkers have published a detailed description of species in the genus Convolvulus using a new method which includes a combination of DNA sequencing and fieldwork that uncovers new species quickly and efficiently. These detailed descriptions are called ‘Foundation Monographs”. Robert previously showed that herbaria contain thousands of undescribed species and the Convolvulus Foundation Monograph describes four species that are new to science. This Foundation Monograph approach will accelerate the rates of new species discovery as we race to describe every flowering plant on Earth.
