Nature offers irreplaceable benefits such as aesthetics and good health, but also more utilitarian benefits such as clean water, productive soils, and an equable climate. But rapid changes are now underway that jeopardize many of the valued benefits we take for granted. In this talk, I will present a brief overview of the changing relationships between society and nature. I will discuss ways of understanding and reacting to these trends, bringing the benefits from nature closer to everyday planning for people, businesses, and governments.
